Description

Neue Karte von Abessinien und Somaliländern, lithographed by W. Gummert and issued by Schropp'sche Landkarten- und Lehrmittel-Anstalt in Berlin in 1935, presents a detailed depiction of the topography and geopolitical divisions of the Horn of Africa. Using nine distinct shades, the map conveys varying elevations, ranging from 500 to 4,000 meters, alongside railways, primary roads, caravan routes, and clear demarcations of national and provincial borders.

During the 1930s, Abyssinia (now Ethiopia) and the Somali territories experienced increasing international attention, with major European powers solidifying their presence in Northeast Africa. This map indicates territories under Italian, English, and French control, as well as a former German colony. The emphasis on elevations and transportation routes underlines the strategic and commercial importance of these regions at the time.

With roots dating back to 1742, Schropp'sche Landkarten- und Lehrmittel-Anstalt had a longstanding reputation for producing reliable geographical and educational materials. This 1935 map captures the changing geopolitical nuances of Northeast Africa, offering both geographical clarity and a reflection of the political landscape of the period.

The map also includes an inset of North Africa and souther Europe, placing emphasis on the relationship between Italy and the region.
