Description

Rare map of the Arabian Peninsula, published in Edinburgh.

The map provides a fascinating look at the vast and diverse region with several major kingdoms, sheikdoms, and tribes.

At the time, Arabia was home to several major kingdoms and sheikdoms. The region which would become known as Saudi Arabia was begining to form around the rule of the Saud family, who began to establish their influence and rule in first half of the 18th Century.

The region around modern-day Qatar was led by the House of Al-Thani, which began to establish their rule in the 1720s.

The Trucial Coast, which includes modern-day Dubai and Abu Dhabi, was ruled by the Qawasim. They were powerful maritime traders who controlled the waters of the Persian Gulf and had a significant influence on the trade routes of the region.  In the coming decades the Bani Yas confederation would settled and begin family dynasties which would come to lead modern day Dubai and Abu Dhab

Kuwait, situated at the head of the Persian Gulf, was an important center of trade and commerce. It was ruled by the Al-Sabah family, who had established their rule in the early 1700s.
