Mapping The Berlin West Africa Conference

Highly detailed map of Colonial Central Africa, published in Hamburg by Ludwig Friedrichsen.

The colored portion of the map includes Gabon, the Republic of the Congo and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with parts of Angola and Namibia to the South.

The map illustrates the by color coding the various colonial powers:

  • Spain - Yellow
  • France - Purple
  • Portugal - Brown
  • Sultinate of Zanzibar - Green

The map illustrates some of the matters addressed by the Berlin West Africa Conference, organized by Otto Van Bismarck and resulted in an agreement referred to as the General Act of the Berlin Conference, which has been describved as the formalization so-called Scramble for Africa, leading to a period of heightened colonialism among the major European powers and largely eliminating or trivializing local and regional autonomy and self-governance.
