Description

Fine early view of Burlington, Vermont and vicinity, published by J.J. Stoner and lithographed by Shober & Carqueville in Chicago, based upon an original drawing by E. Meilbek.

The view shows Burlington from the southwest, with Main Street at the center, with the waterfront on Lake Champlain in the foreground, and the town of Winooski at the top, across the Winooski River.  A breakwater appears, sheltering the waterfront commerce of Burlington, with rail lines servicing the water front and a number of mills stretching out to both sides along the Rutland & Burlington RR.  The key locates 54 points of interest.

Burlington is shown at the beginning of a period of great growth.  The City experienced significant growth between 1877 and 1890, due to expansion of the Burlington and Winooski mills.

Rarity

There appear to be several states of the view, all quite rare.

OCLC locates on the example at the Library of Congress.
