Description

19th-century photo-lithographed facsimile of a map of the Kiev region from Alexander Wilbrecht's famous 1792 Atlas of the Russian Empire (Российский атлас).

Pale of Settlement

The map is interesting for many reasons, not least of which is that it shows the Kiev Governate just after the creation of the Pale of Jewish Settlement (established by Catherine the Great in 1791) and around the same time as the Second Partition of Poland (1793), which caused a great migration of Jews into the area.  The Kiev Governate was one of the original seven regions included in the Pale in 1791.
