Description

Rrare promotional map depicting Denver during the boom times of the late 1880s, catalyzed by the arrival of the railroad and the Colorado silver boom.

The map shows the city from Sloan's Lake and Berkeley Park in the west to the Boston Heights development in the east. The relatively modest area of the original city limits can be seen near the confluence of the South Platte River and Cherry Creek, surrounded by dozens of "additions" that radically expanded Denver's territory. Most of the additions are shown subdivided, with individual lots numbered and presumably available for purchase. Also of interest is the convergence of several major rail lines near the old town, as well as the naturalistic design of the central "City Park." An ad at lower right touts Sage's firm: "Our Specialty: Property on Rapid Transit Lines. Low Prices. Perfect Titles. Square Dealing."

The map also shows the Kansas Pacific Branch of the Union Pacific Railroad; Denver, Texas & Gulf Railway; Denver, South Park & Pacific Railway; Denver & Santa Fe Railway; Denver & Rio Grande Railway. City Park in green. Section and quarter-section lines. Additions: Boston Heights; Villa Park; Evanston; Sheridan Heights; Berkeley and Berkeley Park; Gladstone Heights; Irvington; Swansea, etc.

The map may be dated to 1889, as that is the only year that the Denver City Directory locates published Charles Sage at the 1646 Arapahoe address. Further supporting this date is the absence of Fairmount Cemetery, established 1889-90.
