Description

Detailed manuscript survey of land granted by the New Jersey Proprietors to John Middleton and surveyed by order of James Alexander in 1741 / 1742.

The land in question is located located near Crosswicks Creek, New Jersey and had originally been granted to John Middleton by the Proprietors of New Jersey in February 1732. This survey, conducted by Edmund Beakes, was made pursuant to division of property made by Middleton's will and the subsequent assignment by Thomas Middleton of portions of the original 500 acres owned by his father John.

The survey note states:

Lord James Alexander

Whereas John Middleton of ye County of Burlington Decl (?) having in his Lifetime Obtained a Warrt. of ye Counsil of Proprietors (to thee Directed) for ye takeing up of five hunded acrs of Land on ye Western Division of ye Province of New Jersey Dated ye 21st of February 1732 / 3, & sometime thereafter he ye said John Middleton made his Last Will & Testamet & Amongst other things did Devise to his Son John Middleton ye full Quantity of two hundred twenty-five acrese part of ye Said Warrt. and Pursuant to an order to me Directeded dated ye 3th Jany. 1741 / 2 Requireing me to Survey ye said Jonathan Middleton ye said two hundred twenty five acres . . . .

Edmund Beakes was a Deputy Surveyor in the Colony of New Jersey, working under the direction ofJames Alexander, Surveyor General (and later Governor) of New Jersey in middle of the 18th Century.
