Striking example of this finely engraved map a region in the Veneto area of northeastern Italy.
The map focuses on three areas: Belluno, Feltre, and Cadore. These areas are situated within the diverse topography of the southern Alps, with the map detailing the mountainous terrain and the network of rivers that traverse the landscape.
Belluno, located near the top center of the map, serves as the principal town of the area and is situated along the Piave River. This river, which is the most significant watercourse depicted on the map, flows from the Alps to the Adriatic Sea and has historically been an important conduit for commerce and transport.
The town of Feltre, referenced in the title as "Le Feltrin," lies southward and is known for its historical roots stretching back to ancient and Roman times. Cadore, or "Le Cadorin," shown in the northeastern part of the map, is a district famous for being the birthplace of the painter Titian.
Paolo Santini (1729-1793) was an Venetian engraver known especially for his religious prints and fine cartographic engravings. He published in Venice and may have a been a member of the clergy. In his maps, he largely adopted and adapted the work of his French counterparts, especially the brothers de Vaugondy.
