Born in Clear Lake, Iowa, in 1885, Bob Fletcher relocated to Montana in 1908, where he embarked on a diverse career that included roles as a surveyor for the U.S. Reclamation and U.S. Land Services, and as the Public Works Director in Helena. His career trajectory took a significant turn in 1928 when he joined the State Highway Commission.
In 1935, Fletcher spearheaded the highway markers program to highlight points of interest along Montana's roadways. This initiative, which he led for six years, saw Fletcher collaborate with department graphic artist, known as 'Shorty' Shope, and sign-maker 'Ace' Kindrick. Together, they conceptualized, designed, and constructed over 100 highway markers, many of which remain in place today. These markers, paired with promotional materials for the State Highways Commission—written by Fletcher and designed by Shope—represent a significant contribution to Montana's historical and cultural landscape.
