Description

Scarce map of Louisiana Territory, based upon Page du Pratz's account of Louisiana, including the travels of an Indian named Moncacht-ape. An important early Texana work, referenced in Raines. The map shows a fascinating eastward flowing Missouri River and is valuable for showing French claims to southern territory east of the Mississippi and for particulars concerning Indian nations there. The treatment of the Mississippi Valley and Texas is also noteworthy. Includes information from Louis de St. Denis' expedition to New Mexico in 1715. Du Pratz work affords a great deal of useful information on the Natchez and other Mississippi tribes, which was heavily utilized in later works. Wheat 139. Raines p73. Streeter 127.
