Description

Large map of Dakota detached, but present. The two smaller maps are very good. Overall a very good copy. Governour K. Warren accompanied the Sioux Expedition of 1855 as topographical engineer. The expedition, which was under the command of General William S. Harney, was organized to intimidate the Sioux for killing Lt. John L. Grattan and his men in the summer of 1853. The three maps contained herein are very interesting, especially the massive chart of Dakota Country showing earlier explorations of Major Long, Nicollet, Fremont and Stansbury. "The huge map on the large scale of 1/600,000, RECONNOISSANCES.., is most important.
