Description

Flawless example of the first edition of Tanner's map of Michigan, with interesting early/primitive counties, Indian Lands, etc. A massive Brown County appears in what would become Wisconsin, as does the extension of Michilimackinac County. Massive Sanilac County is still shown. The early steamboat and stage routes are listed and Canals and Railroads (actual and proposed) are listed. The first edition of Tanner's Michigan is highly sought after for this unusual configuration west of Lake Michigan. Tanner's New Universal Atlas became the standard work in the Industry until Tanner sold the rights to the atlas in 1846 to SA Mitchell. The early editions are well regarded for the high quality paper and fine engraving, comparable to the American Atlas. Tanner's Universal Atlas is now rare on the market and the separate maps are now increasingly difficult to obtain.
