Description

Rare large format map of Pennsylvania engraved by Sotzmann for Christopher Ebeling's Erdbeschreibung von Amerika.

Ebeling was a German who undertook and exhaustive study of America, which became a serial publication. Sotzman was selected to engrave maps of the United States. After only 10 maps the projected was aborted making these maps among the scarcest of all state maps according to Manasek. Walter Ristow states that only a handful of North American institutions have examples of all ten maps, making the series among the rarest cartographic Americana for the closing decade of the 18th Century. The map is well engraved and provides excellent topographical and political detail, including land holdings of a number of individuals. West of the Susquehanna River are very large Allegany Grafschaft & Lycoming Counties. While few towns and rivers are identified, many landowners are named. A line divides Depreciation Lands and Donation Lands in Allegany county. Land is further divided into vertical or horizontal tracts. In Lycoming County land is divided into vertical tracts.

A very good example of this rare and highly sought after map. A seminal map for Pennsylvania collectors.
