Description

Finely executed large map of Africa, published in Paris by Lapie.

The map is a fascinating mix of known and unknown cartographic regions.  For example, the area around Senegal is mapped with significant detail, where as virtually nothing is shown in the interior of the "Zahara ou Grande Desert" (Sahara Desert) or Guinee Superieure to the south.  Similarly, vast regions of the Interior of Southeastern Africa and Southern Africa are shown as interior regions unknown to Europeans.

The mix of engraving styles and shading to show mountainous regions is quite elegant and advanced for the period.

A stunning example in attractive colors.
