Description

Ninth Edition of Philips remarkable thematic Mercantile Marine Atlas.

First published in 1904 as "a series of 30 plates containing over 100 charts & plans", the work was periodically expanded and improved for the next 6 decades, with the 16th and final edition published in 1959.

The specific stated intent of this atlas was "enabling the Ocean Highways throughout the World to be dealt with in the most comprehensive manner possible".

Includes:

  • 2 double page images of the national and mercantile flags:
  • 1 commercial chart of the world
  • 27 sea charts
  • 5 physical maps,
  • 1 speed-time-distance graph.

The charts include all the known sea routes for both eastern and western hemispheres, with enormous detail on each of the double elephant folio plates. This is a scarce and striking atlas, and a fine example of early 20th century advances in thematic maps of the sea lanes.

The complete title of the work is:

Philips' Mercantile Marine Atlas: A Series of 35 Plates Containing over 200 Charts and Plans with Tables of 10,000 Distances Between Ports. Supplemented By A New and Original Diagramatic Chart For Calculating Speed, Time & Distance; National and Commercial Flags, Cable, Oiling Stations and Wireless Telegraphy Charts With List of Wireless Stations, And Complete Index of Over 20,000 Ports ,&c.
