Mapping Oil Pipelines, Refineries and Wells in California in 1923

Detailed oil and gas production map of California, overprinted on a map of California published by the US Geological Survey.

The early 20th century was a period of significant Oil & Gas exploration in California. Lewis B. Pusey's 1923 map provides an invaluable cartographic record of this era. Situated within the historic context, the 1920s were pivotal for the Golden State, a time when oil booms shaped its economic and infrastructural fabric, ultimately positioning California as a vital energy hub in the nation.

This map offers an expansive view of the oil and gas fields in California, during a period when oil was one of the state's most important commodities. It delineates areas from south Sonoma County to Orange County, highlighting the extent to which these territories were engaged in oil and gas extraction and refining. The variety of colors overprinted on the blue line map not only signify the oil infrastructure development but also provides a stratified visual representation of producing areas, refineries, and pipelines.

Furthermore, the map's detailed annotations indicate its reliance on multiple authoritative sources. Its base was primarily compiled by the Division of Agricultural Engineering of the Bureau of Public Roads. This foundational layer integrated data chiefly from the latest U.S. Land Office, War Department, Forest Service, and other Geological Survey Topographic Maps.
