With A Stunning Decorative Cartouche -- Bad Pyrmont and Adjacent Mineral Springs

Fine early view of Bad Pyrmont in the Principality of Waldeck. Situated amidst a landscape punctuated by woodlands and rolling terrains, this region was a testament to a rich blend of history, politics, and architectural grandeur.

The structural layout of Pyrmont at the time was reflective of its multifaceted past. Having initially gained its independence from the County of Schwalenberg in 1194, Pyrmont underwent a series of territorial shifts, moving from the dominion of the County of Spiegelberg to the County of Gleichen, before being inherited by Lippe.

By 1740, Pyrmont was part of the County of Waldeck since1625.  Major landmarks within the view including Schlos Pyrmont, Schell Pyrmont, the "Neu Stadt", Brunnen Haus, Waysenhaus, Garten Haus, Bruch Muhle, Ohl Muhle, Fountain and other landmarks are shown.

Stadt Lude is shown in the foreground, with Holtzhausen at the left.

Prominently displayed within the town, one would also encounter the coat of arms for Waldeck. This emblem, a symbolic representation of Waldeck's authority, would be a testament to the 1668 verdict of the Reichskammergericht. The decision had confirmed the Count of Waldeck's rights over Pyrmont, a ruling that had significant implications on the region's administrative and territorial dynamics.

Matthaus Seutter Biography

Matthäus Seutter (1678-1757) was a prominent German mapmaker in the mid-eighteenth century. In 1727 he was granted the title Imperial Geographer. His most famous work is Atlas Novus Sive Tabulae Geographicae, published in two volumes ca. 1730, although the majority of his maps are based on earlier work by other cartographers like the Homanns, Delisles, and de Fer.
