Description

Rare pictographic map of Monterey County, drawn by Ruth Taylor White, one of America's most famous map pictograph artists.

Centered on Monterey Bay, the verso of the map has a lettersheet for the Rio Del  Mar Country Club, with letter addressed to Dr. Anah Wineberg.

Dr. Anah Wineberg-Winton was a medical practitioner and researcher born in 1898 in Norway.  Dr. Wineberg was known for her pioneering studies with growth hormones and their effect on the body. She also experimented with thyroid doses to increase fertility among older women. Wineberg-Winton was especially interested in the study of female menstruation and menopause—breaking research for a day when many doctors still told women they were “emotionally upset at certain times of the month” and advised them to go home and take a tranquilizer.

She graduated from Walla Walla University in 1922 and earned her medical degree from Loma Linda University School of Medicine in 1929. Her research contributed to the understanding of female reproductive health, particularly focusing on menstruation and menopause.

She married Alex Winton in 1940 and practiced medicine in Oakland, California, for 40 years.   Her sister, Helen Wineberg Kendall, established a memorial scholarship in her name at Walla Walla University. The Dr. Anah Wineberg-Winton Memorial Scholarship supports female students in pre-medical, engineering, and science disciplines.
