Description

Nice example of Boisseau's interesting pair of maps of the northern and southern hemispheres, published circa 1640.

The map provides a fascinating look at the regions of the World, with an unusual projection style.

There are a number of editions of the map in French and English, the earliest of which includes Boisseau's imprint.

Includes a dedication to "M. Madame la Princesse Marie de Gonzague". Marie Louise of Gonzaga (1611–1667) was a French princess from the House of Gonzaga, which ruled parts of Italy. She became queen of Poland by marrying two consecutive Polish kings.

  1. First Marriage to Władysław IV Vasa: In 1645, she married King Władysław IV Vasa of Poland and became the Queen of Poland and Grand Duchess of Lithuania. However, they had no children, and Władysław IV died in 1648.

  2. Second Marriage to John II Casimir: After the death of Władysław IV, she married his younger brother, John II Casimir, in 1649. Through this marriage, she continued her role as Queen of Poland.

Marie was an active and influential figure during her time as queen. She was involved in various political and cultural activities in Poland, and her reign was marked by the turbulence of the 17th-century Polish history, including wars and the famed "Deluge" invasion by Sweden.
