Description

This fantastic, Russian-language architectural tableau, lithographed at the establishment of I. Felten in Karlsruhe, offers a comparative visualization of the heights of the world's most notable architectural monuments. This survey encompasses both historically significant edifices and contemporary marvels from diverse geographical locales, stretching from the great pyramids of Egypt to the renowned structures of Russia and Germany.

The view is based on a 1840 French Tableau Comparatif by Perrot.

The late 19th century bore witness to a burgeoning interest in the comparative study of world architecture, with architects and enthusiasts alike striving to comprehend the achievements of various epochs and civilizations. This tableau, apart from demonstrating the architectural prowess of its time, also bridges the temporal divide, juxtaposing ancient wonders like the Pyramid of Khufu (Хеопсова Пирамида) near Memphis, with the then-contemporary structures like the envisioned Cologne Cathedral Tower (Башня Кёльнскаго Собора).

The decorative vignettes, which frame the primary image, further enrich the tableau. These illustrations provide a vivid representation of the facades of eminent buildings, primarily from Russia and Germany, yet also from regions further afield. The presence of renowned statues on both lateral edges enhances the tableau's allure, making it not merely a measure of physical heights, but also an epitome of architectural and sculptural heights achieved by humanity.

Lastly, a mention of the work's origins in Karlsruhe— a nexus of art and technology in 19th-century Germany—bolsters the chart's credibility. Known for its rich tradition of printmaking and cartography, the region's inclusion further elevates the significance of this item.

The print was published in St. Petersburg at Felten's, on Nevsky Prospect.
