Description

Intriguing geological map of the distribution of Cenozoic strata across the United States, surrounded by depictions of Cenozoic fossils, including a mastodon.

The Cenozoic is the most recent period of Earth's history, spanning most of the last 66 million years. The map shows Cenozoic strata depicted in red. These rocks mainly hug the eastern and southern coasts and are also present in quaternary deposits in major fluvial areas. The outlines of other, older geological periods are also shown.

Various fossils line the top of the map, including a huge mastodon as well as parts of angiosperm plants. The work appears to have been used either as a studying aid or as a pedagogical tool. We date the work to about c. 1890, based on the scientific conclusions drawn in other works we attribute to the same author.
