A Sea of Oil Derricks in Downtown Los Angeles

According the Los Angles Department of Water and Power, the present image depicts a field full of oil derricks located just east of 1st Street and Belmont Avenue, near downtown Los Angeles. The image also shows several houses, a tank and other oil facilities in the foreground. 

The printed text on the verso of the mount reads, in part:

This photograph shows part of an oil field in Los Angeles, California... In oil fields, the crude oil is generally stored in tanks of which several small ones are seen in the picture.

The Los Angeles Oil Field was once the top producing field in California, accounting for more than half of the state's oil. In its peak year, approximately 200 separate oil companies were active on the field, which is now entirely built over by dense residential and commercial development.

Condition Description
Original silver gelatin photograph, mounted on card. Photograph measures 5 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches, on card mount, 10 x 8 inches. Caption title printed in silver on recto of mount: "Oil Wells / Los Angeles, California." Verso of mount with printed history of oil development in the United States. Some silvering to edges of photograph, but still a clean, very good image.

In this mirror-image photograph, AS14-67-9367, taken on February 5, 1971, the Apollo 14 Lunar Module (LM) is captured against a dazzling sun glare during the first extravehicular activity (EVA) by the mission's moon-exploring astronauts. A bright trail left by the two-wheeled modularized equipment transporter (MET) can be seen leading from the LM, etched into the lunar soil. While astronauts Alan B. Shepard Jr., commander, and Edgar D. Mitchell, lunar module pilot, were actively exploring the lunar surface, astronaut Stuart A. Roosa, command module pilot, skillfully maneuvered the Command and Service Modules (CSM) in lunar orbit. This striking photograph highlights the collaboration and teamwork that defined the Apollo 14 lunar landing mission.

This mirrored version of the Apollo 12 photograph AS12-46-6813 shows Alan Bean deploying the three-armed Lunar Surface Magnetometer (LSM). The original image, which can be seen here, is somewhat wider and shows the lander at the left. That photo is noteworthy because of a strange glow around Alan and the LSM. In this version of the photograph there is no such glow, however there are other color aberrations in the midground of the image.
