Rare separately published map of South America, published by Louis Delarochette and printed by Thomas Bowles. 

The map identifies the Spanish and Portuguese colonies in South America, a well as contiguous islands in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.  

The map identifies the following places:

South America:

  • Terra Firma to the Spaniards: (Paria, Cumana, Caracas, Venezuela, Rio de la Hacha, Carthagena, Terra Firma, Darien, Panama, New Granada, Popayan)
  • Guayana: Divided among the Spaniards, the Dutch, the French, & the Portuguese.
  • Brasil to the Portugues[e]: which Comprehends 15 Districts or Governm[en]ts.
  • Amazonia or Government of Maynas: Occupied by the Spaniards, and the Portuguese.
  • Peru: (Quito, Lima, Los Charcas)
  • Tucuman: to the Spaniards.
  • Paraguay: (Paraguay, Chaco, Uruguay, Government of Buenos Ayres)
  • Chili
  • Terra Magellanica

Isles in the Atlantic Ocean:

  • (Fernando Noronha, Trinidad, Percy I[s], Faulkland I[s] Sebald de wert, States I[s], Terra del Fuego)

Isles in the South Sea (Pacific Ocean):

"Terra Firma" refers to the mainland area under Spanish control, listing several regions that were considered part of it. "Guayana" was contested by several European powers. "Brasil" was Portuguese territory, encompassing several districts or governments. "Amazonia" or the "Government of Maynas" indicates areas occupied by the Spanish and Portuguese. The other regions such as "Peru," "Tucuman," and "Paraguay" are listed with their respective major cities or subregions. "Chili" and "Terra Magellanica" are mentioned without further subdivision. The list of islands includes those in both the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean, with some islands' names reflecting the European influence or discovery claims at the time.
