Fascinating Civil War News Broadside for the Southern Theater of War in 1861

The broadside issued by Charles Magnus during the American Civil War in 1861 is a compelling piece of history, designed to provide both illustration and information for the general populace. This relatively small, yet detailed broadside is packed with intricate mappings and descriptions, serving as an accessible source of updates about the ongoing war.

The first and dominant feature of the broadside is a birdseye view of "Fortress Monroe, Old Point Comfort, and Hygeia Hotel, VA". The rendition gives an impression of the location's geography and the day-to-day activities within the fortress, surrounding structures, and nearby lands. The detailed portrayal offers glimpses into the strategic importance of the place, including the fort's military arrangement and defenses. The image is reduced from a larger view by Edward Sasche.

The second part of the broadside consists of a regional map of "Richmond & Alexandria". This segment is carefully designed to provide a nuanced understanding of the area, showcasing key landmarks, towns, railroads, rivers, and the regions' connectivity to other parts of the state.

The third section presents a comprehensive "Military Map of Maryland & Virginia". Here, the broadside expands the geographical focus, outlining the larger theater of war, major cities and transit routes.

The final segment loops back to Virginia with a distinct focus on "Fortress Monroe & Richmond". This part zoomsthe area between Richmond and Norfolk, with a meticulous treatment of the towns, roads, railroads, topography and other features.
