Gorgeous example of Lotter's map of North America. While California has not actually been attached to the mainland, it is clearly now present in its peninsular format. The map is based upon De L'Isle's landmark map of 1700. Includes and elaborate decorative cartouche and excellent detail throughout. The tracks of a number of explorers routes are shown along the west coast. Interesting treatment of the Mississippi River Valley. A nice old color example. Tobias Conrad Lotter (1717-1777) is one of the best-known German mapmakers of the eighteenth century. He engraved many of the maps published by Matthaus Seutter, to whose daughter Lotter was married. He took over Seutter’s business in 1756. Lotter’s son, M. A. Lotter, succeeded his father in the business.
