Description

This thematic map of Los Angeles County, titled "Home Values Los Angeles County 1960 Census," is based on median values of owner-occupied homes by Census Tracts. The data on this map was interpreted and authenticated from official census results by Wilbur McCann, an Economic Consultant.

The map presents home values in five classes, with the lowest "Under $11,000" and the highest "$25,000 and over."

Census Tracts are small geographic areas used by the Census Bureau for organizing and publishing results from the Census of Population and Housing. These tracts enable analysis on a small area basis within cities and unincorporated territories.

The median value for each Census Tract was determined during the 1960 Census by asking homeowners to place a value on their homes. The reported values were then tabulated, and the Census Bureau computed a "Median Value" for each tract by determining the midpoint in the range of values reported.

The data on this map holds significance as it portrays the relative differences in home values across various parts of Los Angeles County. Although homeowners' evaluations of their properties may introduce some bias, this bias is expected to be consistent across different areas of the county.

However, there are limitations to the data. Users should be cautious about interpreting the map since many Census Tracts cover large areas, and significant variations can exist within the same tract. It is possible to find pockets of poor housing in high-value tracts and expensive homes within the lowest-rated tracts.

For Census Tracts where a median value was not officially reported due to an inadequate number of homeowners or other reasons, the range in values shown on the map was based on private field checks and personal observation by Wilbur McCann, the Economic Consultant.
