Description

This rare 1963 English-language pictorial tourist map, titled "Ukrainian SSR Tourist Map," provides an engaging and informative representation of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic and the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic during the mid-20th century. The map is particularly aimed at tourists, showcasing major roads, hotels, restaurants, gas stations, auto repair workshops, and campsites throughout these territories.

The map is adorned with the flags of the Ukrainian SSR (UkSSR) and Moldavian SSR (MSSR), reflecting the pride and identity of these Soviet republics. Moreover, the map features illustrations of local war monuments and other landmarks, offering a glimpse into the rich history and cultural heritage of the region during that period.

The State Publishing House "Mystetstvo" of the Ukrainian SSR was responsible for publishing this tourist map. A team of artists, writers, and editors collaborated on the map's creation. The artists, Y. Kovbasa and V. Dahno, brought the visual elements to life, while the text was written by V. Zorjko and I. Smirnov. Editor N. Meshcheriak, technical editor M. Gurzhy, art editor O. Kuzmenko, and proof-reader A. Demidenko ensured the map's quality and accuracy.

With an edition of 8,500 copies, the map was printed at the Frunze Book Factory of the Chief Polygraphic Administration under the Ministry of Culture of the Ukrainian SSR. The factory was located in Kharkov, at 6/8 Donets-Zaharzhevska Street. This mid-20th-century tourist map of Ukraine serves as an invaluable historical document, reflecting the cultural, infrastructural, and touristic aspects of these Soviet republics at the time.

The map also appeared in other languages, including in a Ukrainian-language edition we have previously handled.
