Description

This richly engraved decorative map of North America by Heinrich Scherer showcases California as an island and displays Scherer's distinctive artistic style.

Scherer's "Atlas Novus" was a seven-volume compendium reflecting his devout Jesuit religious values. The atlas, which includes engravings by a young Johann Baptist Homann and others, demonstrates a unique quality and is considered the first "thematic atlas."

The map features a large vignette and cartouche, sea monsters, and several sailing ships, including a prominent ship off the tip of the Baja Peninsula. Scherer's map is not only visually appealing but also historically significant, as it represents the prevailing geographic misconceptions and artistic styles of the time.
