Description

Wonderful bird's-eye view map of Glacier National Park, prepared by McGill-Warner for the Great Northern Railway.

The map provides a unique presentation from an aerial perspective, reflecting the influence and appeal of all things aeroplane in the 1910s, even though passenger flights were still a rarity during the period.

Covering over a million acres in northwestern Montana, Glacier National Park is a major natural attraction. The image emphasizes the park's substantial size and variety of landscapes, from towering mountains and wide valleys to tranquil lakes and dense forests.

Alongside the park's natural features, the map also illustrates the early efforts to accommodate tourism. The Great Northern Railway, seen on the map following the path of the Flathead River, was a major conduit for visitors to the park. The map highlights the extensive network of roads and trails for visitors to explore.

Human-made structures are also given prominence in this map. Hotels and Swiss-style "chalets" constructed by the Great Northern Railway are scattered across the park. These buildings illustrate the early steps toward making wilderness areas accessible for mass tourism.

This map was preceded by a similar image in 1913, which did not make such a specific reference to airplanes.
