Pacific Northwest Train Travel: Alaska, British Columbia + Southern California & California Oil (Maricopa, Kern County)
An album of about 240 lively and evocative original photograph snapshots in the West, documenting family travels over the period 1908-1916, likely compiled by a young woman. The images cover many places, with images of train travel (sometimes taken from a moving train) along some of the main western routes of the day: the Union Pacific, Southern Pacific, and the Canadian Pacific. Includes photographs of Southern California (especially Bakersfield and Long Beach), ship travel on the Princess Sophia to Pacific Northwest, via inside passage to Alaska (Wrangle, Ketchikan, Taku Glacier), also Victoria, British Columbia, and more.
Approximately 20 photographs relate to the operations of the Adeline Oil Co. at Maricopa (near Taft) in Kern County, California, including oil flows, derricks, buildings, etc. Also, nice clear images of family homes, including Southern California bungalows, an ostrich farm, early automobiles, family members, pet dogs, and the like.
The images are extensively captioned on the album leaves.
