Description

Extremely rare separately issued map of the Midwest, showing the location of German Lutheran Missionary Synode's in the Midwest.

Identifies major Lutheran congregations or missions in Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Iowa, with 62 Synode's located and located. The inset shows plans of villages of Frankentrost and Frankenmuth, Michigan. Names of cities with Lutheran congregations underlined in color. Counties identified by numbers keyed to table of references.

Drawn by Moritz Gürsching, a theological candidate and Friedrich Bauer's collaborator in the preparation of the "Holy Helpers" for North America in Nuremberg, the map was published by Löhe in the "Kirchliche Nachrichten aus und über Nord-Amerika" 6, 1848, No. 8 with an "instruction for use" and shows his sphere of influence in North America at that time.  A year later, a second, improved edition appeared: The listing of the "Preachers of the Synod of Missouri, Ohio and other states" was replaced by "Some information about spatial conditions", the "Plan of the mission colony summer 1847 before the arrival of the new settlers" by the previously published map "The Frankish Colonies in the State of Michigan".

During the mid-19th century, German Lutheran missionary work played a significant role in the expansion and development of the Midwestern United States. In the 1840s and 1850s, Lutheran missionaries from Germany and other parts of Europe traveled to Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Iowa to spread the Gospel and establish churches in these rapidly growing regions.

One important aspect of German Lutheran missionary work in the Midwest was the establishment of Synodes, or regional church councils, in each of these states. These Synodes provided support and guidance to the missionaries working in the region, and helped to coordinate their efforts and activities. In addition to supporting the work of individual missionaries, the Synodes also played a key role in establishing and maintaining a strong Lutheran presence in the region.

In Michigan, German Lutheran missionaries played a particularly important role in the founding and growth of two key communities: Frankentrost and Frankenmuth. Frankentrost was founded in 1844 by Lutheran missionaries from the German state of Bavaria, who were seeking to establish a mission in the rapidly growing region of Michigan. Frankenmuth, meanwhile, was founded in 1845 by Lutheran missionaries from the German state of Franconia, who were seeking to establish a self-sustaining community of believers in the new world.
