The 1956 Tour de France was the 43rd edition of the Tour de France,. The race took place from June 30 to July 22, 1956, and covered a distance of 4,480 kilometers (2,780 miles) over 21 stages. The overall winner of the 1956 Tour de France was Roger Walkowiak of France, who was riding for the Mercier-BP-Hutchinson team. Walkowiak won the race by over 19 minutes, becoming the first French rider to win the Tour de France since the war. He also won the points classification, as well as two stages: Stage 3, a flat stage from Brussels to Dunkirk, and Stage 11, a mountain stage from Luchon to Pau.

The King of the Mountains classification was won by Federico Bahamontes of Spain, who dominated the mountain stages with a total of six stage wins. The sprints classification was won by Rik Van Looy of Belgium, who won four stages and consistently placed well in the flat stages.

One of the most notable performances in the 1956 Tour de France was that of Jacques Anquetil of France. Anquetil, who was riding for the Saint-Raphaël team, won a total of six stages in the race and finished in second place overall, just over 19 minutes behind Walkowiak. Anquetil's stage wins included the first two stages of the race, as well as four consecutive stages from 15 to 18. He also performed well in the time trials, finishing in the top five in all three stages.
