Description

This hand-colored lithograph from 1862, published by Henry Bill, depicts the first naval battle between ironclad ships in history, known as the Battle of Hampton Roads.

The lithograph shows the Union ironclad vessel, the USS Monitor, armed with two guns, engaged in combat with the Confederate ironclad, the CSS Virginia (formerly the USS Merrimack), which was armed with ten guns. The CSS Virginia was eventually disabled and the entire Confederate fleet was driven off, according to the caption on the lithograph.

The view also includes illustrations of the Union steamer, the USS Minnesota, and the Confederate steamers, the CSS Jamestown and the CSS Yorktown, as well as the Union frigate, the USS Cumberland.

The Battle of Hampton Roads, which took place on March 8-9, 1862, marked a significant turning point in naval warfare as it demonstrated the effectiveness of ironclad ships in combat.

The view is scarce. There is another version, which seems more common, more readily illustrated online.
