Description

First English edition of Robert Louis Stevenson's gothic novella exploring the dual nature of humanity. Dr. Henry Jekyll, a respected London scientist, develops a chemical formula that allows him to transform into Edward Hyde, a manifestation of his darker impulses and desires. Jekyll initially controls the transformations with his potion, using Hyde to escape societal constraints and indulge his vices without tarnishing his reputation. However, the transformations become involuntary, and Hyde's cruel and violent tendencies escalate, leading to disastrous consequences. Jekyll's struggle to contain his evil counterpart ultimately fails, resulting in tragic outcomes. The novella delves into themes of morality, identity, and the hidden evil within mankind, portraying the conflict between one's public persona and private self.
