Description

Great vintage pictorial map of the British Commonwealth, showing all countries part of the far-reaching claims of England, Scotland, and Wales. Published at the start of the 1940s, as identified by the geopolitical borders. This map would have likely been produced as part of the propaganda that rallied the hopes of civilians on the home front of World War II by showing how powerful the British Empire remained.

The map is simply and pleasingly decorated, and includes a large compass rose. A key in the lower-left divides the types of territories shown according to six categories depending on the level of autonomy: Great Britain, Colonies, Dependencies & Protectorates; Self-governing Dominions and their Dependencies; India and Burma; Anglo-Egyptian Sudan; British Mandated Territories; and Dominion Mandated Territories. The population of all these territories is listed at over half a billion.
