Description

Signed Copy with Original Hand Coloring

Signed example of Colton Waugh's 1928 pictorial map of Long Island and the contiguous parts of Connecticut, published in 1928.

The map reaches from New York City to Fisher's Island and Montauk Point.

Waugh's map is a tribute to the American Revolution, with vignettes of New York City in 1776, the evacuation of New York City in 1783, an early view of Wall Street, and tearing down the Statue of King George on July 6, 1776, along with a portrait of George Washington and plan of Manhattan.  Other illustrations show Sag Harbour Whaling ships.

The body of the map is richly annotated with historical information, including post roads, battle sites and places where Washington slept during the war, among other factoids.

A columnist in a local weekly writes about Coulton Waugh:

Coulton Waugh was the son of noted marine painter Frederick Waugh. The two Waughs differed artistically, yet they shared a love of the sea and were on the best of terms personally. Coulton was a professional sailor and made scale drawings of historic ships, designed fabrics, and made decorative maps and charts…Coulton Waugh was considered to have revived, if not originated the art of decorative map making when he exhibited a large map of silk in 1918 at the International Silk Show in New York City. . .

The present example of the map is hand finished in color, which was a common practice for pictorial maps from this period.

Rarity

The map is quite scarce on the market, especially with Waugh's signature and in original color.
