Description

Fascinating woodcut image of the French siege of Algiers in 1830, with a portrait of Admiral Duperré.

The invasion of Algiers began on July 5, 1830 with a naval bombardment by a fleet under Admiral Duperré and a landing by troops under Louis Auguste Victor de Ghaisne, comte de Bourmont.

The image appeared in a popular calendar published in Basel in 1831 (possibly titled Die Zieguenerin (Wohlgelungene List eines Bauern) (Belohnter Edelmut)).

The image is listed in Populäre Kalender im vorindustriellen Europa: der "Hinkende Bote" kulturwissenschaftliche Analysen und bibliographisches Repertorium : ein Handbuch, published in 2006.
