Description

This 1869 map of the region between Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, and Appomattox Court House, Virginia, was a significant undertaking by the U.S. War Department's Office of the Chief of Engineers to illustrate the geography of the Civil War. Prepared under the guidance of Brigadier General and Brevet Major General A. A. Humphreys, the map is part of a series meant to elucidate the operations of the Armies of the Potomac and James.

In the wake of the Civil War, a comprehensive understanding of the war's geography was crucial for historical record-keeping and future military strategies. The map extends from Lynchburg, Virginia in the southwest, through Washington D.C., to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania in the north, capturing a pivotal expanse of the Eastern Theater. It's a testament to the diligent survey work carried out by Brevet Brigadier General N. Michler and others, and the data collated from the Engineer Department.

This map serves as a window into the Civil War era. It provides detailed topographical information, indicating relief by hachures and drainage patterns. This kind of geographical data, while perhaps more subtle than explicit military details, played a crucial role in shaping the outcomes of the campaigns and battles it chronicles.
