Description

Attractive early 17th-century birdseye view of the city of Milan, showing its attractive geometrical layout

The sub-symmetric layout of the city is easily noticeable, with the Sforza Castle laying along the axis of symmetry at the top of the map. Throughout the map, the important buildings of Milan are readily recognizable, including the Duomo (labeled 1). The walls of the city are surrounded by a moat. All which remains of this body of water in the present day is the small section in the Conchetta district, noticeable in the lower left of this map and labeled Darsena.

Below the map is a key naming 61 places of interest.

Original copperplate engraving by Wolfgang Kilian, from the first edition of 'Mercurius Italicus'.
