Beautifully hand-colored example of Rapin de Thoyras's engraved view-plan of the fortified peninsula of Gibraltar, which Britain had gained only a few decades earlier.
Gibraltar would turn into one of the most important toeholds in the British overseas empire, securing the entrance to the Mediterranean.
The map includes an extensive key set inside a rococo frame, naming 40 points of interest, many of which were of real strategic importance.
