Description

Attractive original antique view of the city of Namur, capital of the region of Wallonia. This city is shown divided by the Meuse River, with its confluence the Sambre.

An imposing fortress, the Citadel of Namur, is shown overlooking the city. The city's fortifications are depicted attractively, as are the many houses and castles of the city. Horsemen are shown in battle outside of the city, which is likely related to the commemoration of Louis XIV's conquest of the city in 1692, noted on the map.

This view was published by Pierre Aveline, one of the foremost viewmakers of the first part of the 18th century.
