One of the Earliest Obtainable Views of Geneva
Rare early bird's-eye plan of the town of Geneva, engraved by Paolo Forlani in Venice and first published in 1567.
Geneva is shown from the south, with the Lake in the foreground and the Rhone River and Arve River beyond.
The map would subsequently be published for Guilio Ballino's Civitatum Aliquot Insigniorum . . . and printed by Zaltieri in 1569.
In lower text banner is a lettered key showing the location of about a dozen important points on the view.
Paolo Forlani (fl. ca. 1560-1571) was a prolific map engraver based in Venice. All that is known of his life are his surviving maps and prints, of which there are almost 100 (185 with later states included in the total). He also produced a globe and two town books. It is likely he came from Verona and that he died in Venice in the mid-1570s, possibly of the plague.
