Description

An Important Early Map of Ireland

Rare early map of Ireland, published by Bolognino Zaltieri.

The depiction shows the island adorned with details of the landscape, including major towns and forests. The image is further enhanced by the presence of the scrolled and foliate title cartouche, located in the upper left corner.

The shape of the island is geographically quite progressive in relation to its contemporaries, and is clearly far more advanced than the maps of George Lily, Abraham Ortelius and Gerard de Jode.    The source for the cartographic content is unknown.

Woodward attributes the fine engraving to Paolo Forlani.

Rare second state of Zaltieri's map of Ireland, with Zaltieri's imprint and the added date of 1566.
