Description

Locating The Pyramids of Egypt

Scarce 2 sheet plan of Cairo, Egypt, published in Berlin by Carl Ritter.

The map shows the area around Cairo, including the Nile river, farmlands, main roads, vegetation, and burial sites including the ruins of ancient Memphis and the pyramids of Saqqara.

Pierre Jacotin was named director of all the geographers and surveyors in the Nile Valley during Napoleon's campaign and siege of Egypt, which lasted until 1801 after Bonaparte had crushed Cairo’s 1798 revolt.  Jacotin initially produced a 21 sheet map of the region from the surveys made during the campaign, but in 1808 Napoleon declared the information gathered in Jacotin’s surveys to be a state secret and forbid the plates from being officially published until 1817.
