Description

CAPITALISTS! Come to San Francisco.

Separately issued 1894 edition of the beautiful Langley Directory map, part of the most attractive series of color-lithographed maps of the city from the end of the 19th century.

This example includes additional printing to advertise the real estate businesses of Baldwin & Hammond and George W. Chapin. The latter is heavily advertised on the back of the map: "CAPITALISTS And Parties Having Money to Invest Will Find it to Their Interest to Call on GEO. W. CHAPIN, REAL ESTATE AGENT."

The city is broken up between old Ranchos, the Presidio Reservation, and City Wards.

Comparing the map to the 1870s editions surprisingly little has changed. The docks and wharves downtown are the most obvious improvements.

This edition bears the imprint: "Copyright 1894 by Geo. B. Wilbur Receive of Painter & Co."

Rarity

The individual editions of the Langley maps are rare; this 1894 edition is recorded by OCLC in only two examples, NYPL and California Historical.
