Description

Fine full original hand-color example of this striking map of the area around Vienna, published by Mortier in Amsterdam.

The map shows the Danube River, with Vienna at its center, and extending to Perzendorf and Muckendorf in the northwest and Mannsdorf and Haslau-Maria Ellend in the southeast.

Vienna underwent a major siege shortly before this map was made, in 1683, in which the Ottoman Empire had been repulsed. The period after this witnessed the consistent reversal of Ottoman rule in southeastern Europe.

The color is truly exceptional.

Fine original color. Small folded flap of paper at the bottom of the centerfold.

Pierre Mortier Biography

Pierre, or Pieter, Mortier (1661-1711) was a Dutch engraver, son of a French refugee. He was born in Leiden. In 1690 he was granted a privilege to publish French maps in Dutch lands. In 1693 he released the first and accompanying volume of the Neptune Francois. The third followed in 1700. His son, Cornelis (1699-1783), would partner with Johannes Covens I, creating one of the most important map publishing companies of the eighteenth century.
