Description

Detailed map of the Northern Sky by Doppelmayr and published by Johann Baptiste Homann.

Fine map of the northern hemisphere sky by Nuremberg astronomer and professor of mathematics Johann Gabriel Doppelmayr (1677-1750).

The chart illustrates the northern sky centered on the equatorial pole. The constellations are shown as figures from classical mythology per the catalogue of Johannes Hevelius and include Leo, Orion, Ursa Major, Aries, Taurus, Hercules, Pisces, Sagittarius, Centaurus, Aquarius, Capricorn, and many more. At both sides are tables of the constellations with their magnitudes and the locations of their main stars, finished with decorative putti holding various instruments, including a pendulum clock, an azimuth circle, a telescope, and a sextant.

In the beginning of the 18th-century Doppelmayr worked closely with Johann Baptist Homann (1664-1724) to produce a number of celestial maps and diagrams with explanations intended as an introduction to astronomy.
