Description

The Headwaters of the Mississippi.

Interesting and very scarce Minnesota-published map of the headwaters of the Mississippi River (Lake Itasca) and the surrounding region.

The map shows the White Earth Indian Reservation, Chippewa Indian Reservation, Leech Lake Indian Reservation, Red Lake Indian Reservation, and Cass Lake Indian Reservation.

OCLC locates one copy of Part A, and one copy of Part D (Minnesota Historical Society).

Logging around Lake Itasca

The map has some pencil manuscript, especially around Manomin Lake, possibly denoting timber tracts and logging.

Logging was a major late-19th-century conservation issue in the Lake Itasca region. The lake had recently been reaffirmed as the source of the Mississippi; in 1889 Jacob Brower undertook a survey of the area at the behest of the Minnesota Historical Society to check the issue.  Simultaneously major logging operations were underway in northern Minnesota and the Itasca region was affected as well. Because of the work of the Minnesota Historical Society and state Senator John Sanborn, Lake Itasca State Park was created on April 20, 1891 - the same year this map was published.
