Description

Interesting early 19th Century Physical map of North America, one of the earliest thematic physical maps of this genre. The topographical details in the west are extrarodinary in their inaccuracy. The maker put serious effort into providing exacting details to a number of mythical features, including an Apocryphal South Branch of the Columbia River extending nearly to Salt Lake (Timpanagos). A similar river connecting San Francisco Bay and Salt Lake, extending on the the Rocky Mountains, and several very mythical western ranges. A similarly mythical set of mountains can be located in the Plains States. A marvelous scientific misprojection.
