Description

Early Aspen Ski Trail map, issued for the Winter of 1959-1960.

The map was issued the year after the opening of Aspen Highlands and 12 years after the opening of Aspen Mountain in 1947.

The map, superimposed over a 1956 BBB photograph of the mountain, uses a 3 color code system for the difficulty of each run:

  • Green -Beginner
  • Yellow - Intermediate
  • Red - Expert

The sun deck at the top is noted, with the names and heights of the major peaks across the top.

As noted in the text on the verso, Aspen was celebrating the addition of two new double chair, "high speed" lifts, capable of transporting 800-900 skiers per hour (this compares to 2400 per hour on a typical modern "high-speed quad".
